You would not believe how many attempts are made by hackers to break into other computers. They have programs running on computers that are scanning day and night trying to find a security weakness that they can take advantage of.

A firewall is a either a hardware or software implemented form of protection. It blocks internet traffic from entering (and the better ones exiting) your computer.

A few years ago a friend told me how he installed a firewall at someone's house before dinner, and while eating dinner the computer was "probed" by a hacker's program seven times in about half an hour! 

If you have more than one computer, you probably have a router. If so, hopefully it has a built in hardware firewall. If not, go get a LINKSYS wired or wireless router. (Hint... you can get the wired on on eBay for $11-$19 used. Many people are upgrading to wireless so they are dumping their old one. Search for "befsr41". It allows you to network and share your internet connection with up to 4 computers. I had one of these and loved it. I sold it to my friend because I upgraded to wireless. )
